Scholes was a boyhood Latics fan having grown up in neighbouring Langley and has spoken in the past of his desire to manage the club.He has signed a one-and-a-half year contract and takes charge of a teamsitting 12th in the League Two table, seven points off the play-off places.He will be assisted at Boundary Park by Mick Priest, Oldham’s former academy chief who has also spent time on the coaching staff at Man United, Fulham and Maccabi Haifa.A statement from Oldham owner Abdallah Lemsagam read: Paul has won everything there is to win in football.He is a man who will bring a lot of footballing knowledge and his hunger to succeed in management will be there for everyone to seeIts no secret how much he has wanted this job in the past and how much he loves this club, so Im very happy to bring him into our family at Oldham Athletic.Paul will have my backing 100% and hopefully we can work together to bring success back to this club.2

Paul Scholes has been working as a pundit for BT Sport in recent years and was part of the takeover of Salford City in 2014

Scholes, who spent his entire playing career with United and won 20 major trophies, including 11 Premier League titles, has very limited coaching experience but talked only last month about his eagerness to get back into football, almost six years since his retirement.Oldham approached the 44-year-old after sacking Frankie Bunn in December but the appointment was held up while he awaited clearance from the English Football League (EFL) to take charge.Scholes owns a 10 per cent stake in National League promotion chasers Salford City and the EFL needed to investigate whether there would be a conflict of interest.Salford announced on Monday afternoon that Scholes would resign as a club director but retain his stake in the club. Scholes revealed he had thought long and hard about embarking on a managerial career and was delighted to get started.“I couldn’t be any happier at the minute,” he told Oldham’s official website. “It’s been a while. Obviously there’s been talk of it when I finished my (playing) career.“It wasn’t something I was quite ready to do and there’s obviously been three or four times over the last six years where it could have happened and I’ve not been quite ready.“But now I feel, I hope, the time is right to give it a go and hopefully we can be successful together.”
